Public Presentations:
- Gwen Frostic: Many people are familiar with
Gwen Frostic through her beloved nature prints, though not many
people know the remarkable story of her life. At the end of Frostic’s
life, she was an artist and a successful entrepreneur. She began
life with such a profound physical handicap that teachers predicted
she would never be able to write her own name. How Gwen Frostic
went from being a handicapped child in a world with few expectations
of her to a woman of many accomplishments is an amazing story
involving art, attitude, and a red-winged black bird.
Jennifer Morrison conducted a series of interviews with Gwen Frostic
during her tenure as curator of the Benzie Area Historical Museum
in Benzonia, Michigan. Morrison's presentation, "A Walk with
Gwen Frostic," is inspiring and entertaining. She has conducted
it at such venues as the Gerald R. Ford Museum, Frederik Meijer
Gardens, and the Michigan Archival Association annual conference,
as well as for Rotary clubs and church groups, and most recently
as a celebration of her 100th birthday in Gwen’s hometown
of Wyandotte, Michigan.
- Emily Jewell Clark: Jennifer also gives presentations
about Emily Jewell Clark, a local philanthropist and social reformer.
Clark’s concern for “super-annuated” ministers
resulted in a gift of her home and twenty acre farm that has become
Clark Retirement Community today. Clark and Jane Blodgett founded
the Children’s Aid Society that survives as the current
D.A. Blodgett Home for Children. An art collector and enthusiast,
Emily Jewell Clark provided the funds to purchase the first building
to house the Grand Rapids Art Museum. She also sponsored a building
at the Starr Commonwealth in Albion. History has done little to
mark her enduring contributions, but Jennifer’s presentation
illuminates the story of this fascinating and important woman.
